Friends and fellow Uncommoners, welcome to the ebook launch day!  I am proud to now offer the The Life Uncommon: How to Leave the Rat Race, Pursue Your Passions, and Succeed Financially, a 50 page ebook full of step by step guidance, tips, tricks, and motivational quotes to get you living the life you want to lead, authentic to your goals and dreams and full of satisfaction and fulfillment.

The truth is even though we live in an era of economic stability and financial upheaval, there is no better time to take control of your life and shape it in your image.  Thanks to the internet and the global economy, it is possible to turn any passion into an income generating vocation.  This book helps you grab that control, and learn how to craft a career and lifestyle that are to your specifications.  After all, life is too short not to do what you love.

To give you a taste of what you will get in The Life Uncommon, here is an excerpt from Part One.  Enjoy it, buy the book, and remember, it is never to late to live your own life uncommon!

The greatest “mysterious force” that drowns out our authentic voices is the concept of “the real world.” This phrase is thrown at us when we step off society’s path, when we color outside the lines, or when we dream big about things that threaten others’ perception of life. John Mayer’s lyrics “Welcome to the real world, she said to me condescendingly,” is the quintessential use of this term – something I am willing to bet you have heard someone say to you, or maybe you have said to yourself.

This “real world” is a place we are all suddenly ushered into as we move past the rite of passage from youth to adulthood. It is full of bills to be paid, commitments to be honored, responsibility to be had, and sacrifices that need to be made for reasons that most people can’t explain to you – other than the lame reason of “just because.” And the “real world” is notorious for drowning out one’s ability to listen to their internal voice. Not much sense in that, especially since the whole thing is a big, fat lie.

There, I said it. The idea of “the real world” is a lie. It is a contradiction in principle, a perpetuated oxymoron. There is little real about the “real world”: authenticity, sincerity of purpose, and genuine pursuit of life and work have nothing to do with it. Following a pre-destined, pre-trodden path is what it is about– it is like that board game, The Game of Life: pick one of these seven jobs, pick your partner, and start marching down the game squares, a one way street of pre-determined milestones, rewards, and challenges.

Many of you are probably rolling your eyes and saying, “lady, tell us something we don’t know.” It is true; the concept of the socially induced “real world” has been batted back and forth for decades. Yet for some reason, the lie perpetuates and generation after generation is directed by parents, mentors, and society onto the “real world” conveyor belt.

After all, if you are doing what everyone else is doing then there is safety in numbers, right? See something that works and stick to it, don’t fix what isn’t broken – this clichéd mentality suggests that the predictability of the “real world” is what makes it your best bet. Why take a chance on a far-flung dream (that may fail!) when you could follow a formulaic pattern that leads to an already determined – and hopefully successful – conclusion.

Traditionally, I like predictability – surprises are not my thing. But even I can see in this age of economic, social, and global upheaval that the foregone conclusions of the previous decades about how to procure and maintain financial and emotional security are out the window…

Amazing, beautiful article! Thank you so much for writing this! I honestly have no words for how much I like this article. I could not agree with you more, and I’m so happy to see someone who shares my belief. I share this article with friends, and have even linked to it through my writing (I am writer for the Toronto Examiner). Peace :)
