Elin Lanto, Lyrics from As Long as I Can Dream
Some people get complacent with their lives – comfortable with a mediocre lifestyle and medium level of happiness. Others fear change, despite the fact that our lives are changing all the time. But you know that it is hard to forget about that passion building up deep down inside of you; those roaring flames that you hold tucked inside of you, burning red hot and just waiting for you to feed them some oxygen.
So why don’t you?
You don’t have to quit your job tomorrow to follow your dreams. Take it in stages. Want to be a writer? Start reading more of your favourite authors and then write some drafts of the kinds of things you’d like to publish. Want to be an architect? Volunteer at a charity that builds homes.
It doesn’t cost you much except time to research your dream and find out what your options are – the possibilities might be endless. Consider it an investment on your future; in the short term you may have to work on your dreams and continue your ‘day job’ at the same time, but in the long term you could reap the rewards. None of this will happen if you don’t dip your toes in the water to find out.
How can you test your ideas?
- Do some research. Google is your friend. See if anyone else has your idea – and if so, what are they doing with it? Maybe you can do it better, faster, or cheaper. Do you need specific knowledge, experience, or skills to build your product or offer your service? Get into the details.
- Do some networking. Facebook Groups are good for this although be sure to check out how active the group is before participating; in addition, use the search functions on Twitter to find folk working in your field or similar areas. Is there a major website forum discussing your subject area? Get involved.
I beg you – don’t just let your dream live in those wee hours of the morning while you lay fast asleep. Wake up and take action!
I leave you with the wise words of Paulo Coelho from The Alchemist, a man who has influenced, shaped, and led many a life uncommon:
There is only one thing that makes a dream impossible to achieve: the fear of failure.

Hi Andy (and Nacie),
My dream is to make my income doing what I love. My blog is part of checking this out (you’re most welcome to visit). I guess this comment is part of networking.
What I love is connecting deeply with people about stuff they care about. My particular topic is health with a slant to self-development. Anyone similar is very welcome to contact me!
@ Lori – don’t let it slip away. Be sure to book at least an hour or two a week in your diary to work on planning/brainstorming your dream. Get a notebook – something with a fun cover – and take notes.
@ Evan – Looks like you are well on your way to making your dream happen. Excellent.
Thanks Andy!!
