yes, this is a hamster holding a mini cake...what?
Friends and Uncommoners, I am so proud to announce that our little community is one year old this month, and I am just overwhelmed with the progress that we have made together. In honor of this wonderful occasion, I ask you to indulge me as I review this past year and project what the plan is for the future. To reward your patience with my reverie and to thank you for your loyalty over this past year, I am offering a special anniversary present at the bottom of the post.
Now, who’s ready to go down memory lane…
This site was originally started as my personal blog at the end of May, 2008 with the intention of using it as a venting space/chronicle for my journey out of the corporate rat race. I used a pseudonym (“Isolde”), and spent many of the earlier posts postulating on super abstract topics (more abstract than now!) and griping about specific situations that were happening on the road to liberation. The readership was small but loyal, and the blog was my sanctuary to be myself at a time when I felt like I had few other outlets to do so.
The natural climax of my personal blog at TLU was when I actually quit my job. After 4 months of obsessively blogging about it, the day finally came – and then I felt like there was nothing more to say. For a few weeks I was unsure where to take the site and its growing base of readers, feeling like I had achieved the goal and there was nothing more to say. Until I realized that the transition didn’t just end when I quit my job, and that a true Uncommon Life was an ongoing process. I switched my focus to detailing what was happening in my life post-rat race, the challenges I was encountering, and the other projects I was working on.
Within the first few months of being free from the rat race, I devoted much of my effort to writing and publishing my ebook, The Life Uncommon: How to Leave the Rat Race, Pursue Your Passions, and Succeed Financially. As the ebook was loaded onto the site, I tweaked and updated various pages and features in little bursts, hired a web developer, and began to participate in forums to spread the message of TLU.
As the number of followers started to grow exponentially, the direction of the site shifted from a personal blog to a community resource center, mixed with informative articles, links to worthwhile sites and products, and guest posts from some of our very Uncommon friends. Today the site is flourishing as I try to maintain a balance between my own personal experiences and more concrete substance for our international readership base. We have heard some wonderful first hand accounts of fabulous Uncommoners all over the world who are out there living their design and making it work. We have met budding Uncommoners who are just started to take the first tentative leaps as well as seasoned lifestyle design artists who have played by their own rules for years.
And I have to tell you all – I am having the time of my life. It is such a pleasure to interact with all of you day in and day out, hearing your thoughts, stories, and anecdotes. I am truly blessed to be able to connect with all of you, and this first year has been nothing but a success.
So what’s on the horizon, you ask? More exploration, more information, and more expansion into the Uncommon world. We have only begun to scratch the surface of what it means to live uncommonly, and this next year will be filled with additional features like Podcasts, video posts, and work on print publications. The sky is the limit – if there is something you would like to see more of (or less of!) on this site, please feel free to let me know at nacie (@) thelifeuncommon.net
