Fully Alive, Fully Engaged—5 Tips to Uncommon Self-Care

By Shannon Bruce, PCC

As Nacie said in her post Walk in Balance All Our Days, “finding and maintaining a good work-life balance is an essential task for any Uncommoner, and yet it is one of the hardest things to achieve.” She also went on to share 18 Tips to Improve Your Productivity that will create efficiency and effectiveness helping to improve your work life balance. This is great stuff and all so very true! And, there’s more….

I want to point out a subtlety that every Uncommoner must be aware of…it’s the trap of getting caught up in “doing” too much work, even work you love, to the exclusion of “being” fully alive and fully engaged with your life.

Let me ask you a question…Are you running yourself ragged taking care of all of the tasks on your “To-Do List” as you boldly move forward to creating your Uncommon Life? If you answered “yes” to this question what’s the impact of this on “the rest of your life”? Do you feel alone in your endeavors? How are your relationships? Do you feel empty on the inside? Are you beginning to get “less than” results?

Another key element to living an Uncommon Life is to practice Uncommon Self-Care that honors all facets of your life, which includes your work. One of the ways to assess how fulfilled you are in all areas of life is to complete a Personal Assessment Wheel.

As you explore how alive and engaged you are in your entire life, you can make sure that you are taking care of your heart and the core of who you. This allows you to create synergy in your “being” and “doing” so you can get the greatest results with the least amount of effort as you pursue your Uncommon life.

As you contemplate the great suggestions Nacie has offered, let me add 5 Tips for Uncommon Self-Care.

  1. Pace yourself. Remember life is a journey, not a destination. Hold the perspective that you’re running a marathon rather than a sprint. Get the rest you need, plan healthy meals, and exercise just like a marathon runner does in preparation for the race.
  2. Be a wise steward. Expand your idea of being a steward from managing your finances to include being a steward of the resources of your time, your relationships, your energy, and your priorities. If you are overdrawn, it’s time to make a deposit.
  3. Pick a “me time” activity that renews and replenishes you. Maybe it’s gardening, reading, meditating, painting, writing, or even exercising.
  4. Make time to partake in your “me time” activity. Creatively alter your schedule and write your activity down in your calendar.
  5. Raise your emotional intelligence. Practice the 10 Step Curriculum for Emotional Wisdom.

One thing to remember….you are worthy of some quality “self-care”. Others depend on you so be sure to keep your cup “full” so you can live from that fully alive and engaged place. Not only will you find the work life balance you desire, but you will also have a greater ripple effect of positive influence in your families, communities, and the world!

These are some awesome points, Shannon – I couldn’t have said it better! I think the point about “me” time to pursue a hobby is a really important thing to remember. That hobby can be anything, from building model trains to hitting the gym – just something to get you out of your own head for a while.

As always, thanks for your fabulous contribution!
