This past week, I’ve been enjoying an absolute storm of creativity and innovation. It seems like every few hours I’ve had a burst of inspiration, which, coupled with a nice boost in energy thanks to more frequent exercise, has made me very prolific but very all over the place.
While this has made my train of thought hard to really nail down, it has also helped me generate tons of topics I want to share with the Uncommon community. It’s going to be a post-filled month!
Some of the things that have been bouncing around in my brain the last few days include the following:
- the law of attraction
- keys to successful blogging
- value of positivity
- creating profit and financial well-being
- effective search engine optimization
- increased amount of protein in diet for muscle development
- relationship between exercise and energy/well-being/productivity
- optimal diets, sources of nutrition, and types of food for energy/well-being/productivity
- effective structuring of time
- finding a voice
- caffeine and productivity/creativity/innovation
- value of rising early
- passive revenue streams
So as you can see, I’ve got a lot going on up there right now! And I can confidently say, this dose of innovation is much better than the opposite: uninspired, unimaginative boredom. Also, this storm of ideas has taught me a few important lessons about how to handle such incredible mental events that I would like to pass on to you:
Keep a Notebook Handy…
I always heard this piece of advice and always rolled my eyes…until I was without a piece of paper last week to record a stroke of genius that hit me while I was out of the house. That great idea, whatever it was, is now lost to the ages, however its passing was the price I had to pay to learn about the value of having a notebook handy at all times. Sure, your ideas might not make much sense to you when you read them later on, but they will at least have a fighting chance of sparking something worthwhile if you can remember what they are!
…And Use It!
While this point may seem repetitive of the previous paragraph, trust me it bears repeating. It isn’t enough just to have a notebook – you need to use it! Even if you think it is an idea you can remember, write it down! Life has a way of intervening and snatching that brilliant idea – not matter how secure it seems – right out of your head.
Go With The Flow
This past week I kept having the urge to stop and write long posts or do considerable research sessions based on the ideas that kept popping up, but when you are in a creative groove you can’t put things on pause to develop them, you just have to go with the flow. This is why writing ideas down is so valuable. The creative storm will end (eventually), and then you will be able to pick through what was produced and select what’s a good idea and what’s a bad one (because they are certainly not all going to be good!). Trying to stop in the middle and develop an idea will only frustrate the creative flow and also make you unable to adequately focus on one specific idea.
Don’t Complain!
These creative storms happen once in a while, and the are the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. The Uncommon Life should be a series of creative bursts and then productive efforts to research, develop, and implement the inspiration. Sure, they’re inconvenient, and take all your mental resources, and make it hard to focus – but they are total gravy. Don’t complain about them when they come, be grateful, go with the flow…and be sure to write stuff down. (did I mention that already?)
If there is something you are particularly interested in seeing more of on this site from the list above, drop a comment and let me know!

Great post! It’s funny because I also had a creative storm last week. Maybe there was something in the air!
It had to be the full moon! I have a notebook next to my bed and I find myself waking up in the middle of the night to write a good idea down. While some weeks less frequent, I still find myself doing it. I’m also a frequent get-out-of-the-shower-to-write-an-idea-down type of person. Guess I get my best thinking done when I’m sleeping and/or barely awake in the mornings. Ha!
@Kim: I agree with you, there must have been something in the air, and I’m happy to hear that you enjoyed the same surplus of creative energy!
@Kaila: Sounds like that notebook of yours must be filled with awesome ideas! Good for you for writing them all down, I firmly believe that the more ideas you generate, the more likely you are to come across one that is a real winner!
