Welcome to your first Monday of 2010.  The kids are back in school, the commuters are back to clogging the streets, and you are back at your desk 9-5.  It’s back to reality after the holidays, and if you are like most people, you probably have a case of the “Mondays.”

While you may think I’m just being cruel pointing this out (especially when it is painfully obvious), there is a method to my madness: I don’t want you to experience any more bad Mondays, and I know a quick and easy way you can turn the worst day of the work week into a breeze.

My first recommendation of course is to quit the job that gives you a case of the Mondays in favor of pursuing your Uncommon Vocation (is career development on your resolutions list?).  But I know that everyone is on their own schedule with this and you can’t rush into it if you want to succeed.  Therefore, you may have to experience a few more Monday mornings before you follow my first piece of advice.

For those who are in this boat, the answer to dealing with a case of the Mondays is easy and free.  You just have to identify your personal energy source.

Your personal energy source is something or things that get you jazzed up almost immediately.  You may have just one personal energy source or one thousand.  It can be a piece of music, a color, a phrase you say to yourself, or a mental snapshot of a goal.  The only criteria it needs to meet is that it gets your engines roaring and it is easily and always accessible.

When it comes to fighting the Mondays, there are few things more effecitve than calling on your personal energy source.  After all, what are the Mondays, anyway?  They are the feelings of being tired, run down, bored, unhappy, resentful, and a little depressed.  They are the realization that you have days and days of this same sh*t ahead of you, and that your next break away from work isn’t even on the horizon.

But by focusing on your personal energy source – a thought or thing that inspires and empowers you – those negative and unempowered feelings just fade away.  The best part is that you can use them over and over throughout the day – and week! – anytime the Mondays threaten to take hold again.

Here are some examples of my personal energy sources:

  • the 1812 Overture
  • the color green
  • diet pepsi
  • quotes from Zoolander
  • the Philip Stein watch I want

My list is much longer, but I don’t want to bore you :)   The bottom line is that by clearly identifying the things that make you feel happy and energetic you are creating an army of emotions that can help you battle the evil Mondays, and even help you make Monday your best day of the week.

My challenge to you: can you list at least 3 personal energy sources?

Here’s to your Uncommon Life,

@Sudeep – Welcome to TLU! I love Problogger! Darren is fabulous!

Your list is wonderful, good for you to have a clear idea of what gets you energized. When you say “Alchemist,” do you mean “The Alchemist” by Paulo Coelho? That is one of the most inspiring/energizing books I’ve ever read, packed full of amazing quotes.
