Have Your Found Your Passion Yet?

November 1, 2011

Once you have made the decision to live your life with passion, the next step is to find it. The problem is that no one explains how to go about this process. The truth is that finding your passion is easier than you think. I think that even the term “find” your passion is a bit of a misnomer. It implies that you have to do something or take some specific action to uncover it. Before you make plans (literally or figuratively) to embark on a quest to find this elusive thing called a passion, make sure that you are looking in the right place. Find Passion by Looking Inward If you really want to find your passion, don’t look outside of yourself for clues. You already have all the information you need and it’s right at your fingertips.

Feeling Swamped? Relax and Rise to the Surface Again

October 27, 2011

Have you ever gone through a time in your life where you felt as if things were spinning out of control? As much as we like to think that we are in control of the events which shape our lives, the truth of the matter is that we really aren’t. In fact, so many of us worry and stress about events in our lives because we are trying to retain a sense of control over them and deep down, we know that we don’t have it.   What can you do when you feel waves of stress crashing down around you? One way that people respond is to feel swamped by the strong feelings that this type of experience can create. Picture yourself falling into a body of water for a minute. You hit its surface and you continue to sink deeper and deeper into the water. For a moment, you may think that you will never stop falling and it’s at this point that you may start to panic.

How to Make Your Uncommon Life Easier

October 25, 2011

All of us are busy. Scratch that – all of us are wayyyy beyond busy.  We have families to care for, friends to see, passions to pursue, jobs to do, money to make,  homes to clean, food to cook, and dreams to dream – and somewhere in there, we are supposed to find time to take care of ourselves, eat right, get exercise and – oh yeah – sleep. The great challenge of living an Uncommon Life is balancing the ambition of living purposefully and passionately (which require special amounts of energy) with the need to care for ourselves and those we love. The good news is that we live in a world full of gadgets, services, and products that are designed to make our Uncommon Lives easier…all we have to do is have the good sense to take advantage of them. Over the summer, I was trying to do it all, and do it all the hard way. For example, I was making my own fruit cups at home (wash, dry, cut, box up, clean-up), or I was trying to tweet in the moment all the time and constantly forgetting. The result was that all the little things in my day started to take up more time than they should have, and someone who was already running on all cylinders (moi!) started to run…

Add Being Happy to Your To Do List – Today

October 20, 2011

If you ask someone about what they want out of life or what they want for their children, one of the answers you may get is, “to be happy.” The elements and conditions which need to be present to constitute happiness vary, depending on the person. In many cases, the idea of being happy is tied in to a specific set of circumstances. Are you putting off being happy? It’s something that many of us end up doing. If you have ever caught yourself saying or thinking that once you get to a certain stage or reach a specific goal that you will be happy, you have fallen into this way of thinking. Many of us look at our present circumstances and focus on the things that we either wish were different or want to improve on. While there is absolutely nothing wrong with having goals and wanting to achieve them to get the type of life that you want, it would be a mistake to overlook the positive things in your life as it is. The good news is that you can take stock of where you are right now and think about the good things in your life.

Managing Professional Burnout

October 18, 2011

You know the feeling.  That slow-creeping sense of mental “blah” that starts as a kind of morning haze and then gradually, over a week or two (or three) turns into a pervasive feeling that you just can’t shake as you go through your daily routine. This is professional burnout. Professional burnout can happen to anyone at any time in their careers. It is not relegated to people who work 70 hours a week, or reserved for those of us in high-stress jobs.  Professional burnout can happen to part-timers, students, and those of us lucky enough to love what we do.  And in this economy, it is more prevalent than ever. When the job market is good and we feel secure in our ability to find work, keep work, or get clients, professional burnout can occur from a lack of basic self-care, going too long without a vacation, or becoming so absorbed in your field that there is work-life balance, only work. Yet in a consistently down economy like the one we’ve been facing for the last three years, burnout can come a lot faster due to the fact that we always need to be “on.”  Without the sense of stability and security that accompanies better job markets, we are always on guard, always trying to impress or achieve – and not out of a desire…
